What is Pinkeye?
Pinkeye, more formally known as conjunctivitis, is a common and highly contagious condition that usually affects children. A child with pinkeye has an inflamed conjunctiva, which is a clear, thin tissue that lines the inside of the eyelid and spreads over the white of the eye.
Pinkeye usually isn’t serious, but a patient should call us if any of the following are true:
• Bright lights cause them severe pain
• They have trouble seeing
• They have a lot of yellow or green discharge from their eye
• They have shaking chills, high fever, facial pain, and/or vision loss
While pinkeye has multiple causes, it is most usually caused by a virus. It can also be caused by allergies or a bacterial infection. The treatment will, thus, depend on what caused the pink eye.
What is Dry Eye Syndrome?
Dry eye is a group of chronic conditions in which the eyes either don’t produce enough tears, or they don’t produce tears with the needed mix of layers. Normal tears have an inner mucus layer, a middle watery layer, and an outer oily layer. All three layers help lubricate the eye.
Dry eye syndrome or keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) is the most common form, and it is caused by tears that don’t have enough water. Most patients with dry eye are older women.
What are Focusing Problems?
Focusing problems or refractive disorders are extremely common disorders in Georgia. They include such well-known problems as myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness), astigmatism, and presbyopia. Most focusing problems are treated with prescription glasses or contact lenses. Some patients may elect to undergo another treatment.
